The use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is growing, especially in e-mobility. After their use phase in the vehicle, these batteries still have 70-80% residual capacity and are suitable for secondary use, for example in stationary energy storage systems. However, there are still many unanswered questions regarding safety as well as social, ecological and economic aspects.<\/p>\n

SafeLiBatt investigates the safety and sustainability of second-life LIBs. To this end, batteries are artificially aged, checked for their state of health and thermally tested in order to assess the toxic exhaust gases and environmental risks that arise in the event of damage. In addition, drivers, barriers and requirements for the market launch are analyzed in expert interviews. A life cycle assessment based on future scenarios creates the basis for the development of sustainable second-life markets in line with the circular economy.<\/p>\n
